NR 24-16 Update – Deputy Involved Shooting
The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office has identified the male subject involved in the deputy involved shooting that occurred on December 17, 2024, in Viera. The subject is 55-year-old Robert Barry, of Viera.
The incident began on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at approximately 2:45 a.m., when deputies responded to the 1100 block of Egret Lake Way in Viera in reference to a disturbance. Upon arrival, deputies learned that a domestic disturbance had occurred where Robert Barry threatened a female with a firearm and a knife. In an effort to get away from Barry, the female ran to a neighbor’s residence to report the incident to law enforcement. Deputies made telephone contact with Barry, who was not cooperative with the investigation and was making verbal threats. At approximately 3:45 a.m., Barry exited his residence while holding a handgun to his head. As deputies attempted to negotiate with him, the male pointed the handgun at them, and a deputy was forced to respond to the threat of the firearm by discharging his weapon.
Mr. Barry was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is identifying the deputy involved in the shooting incident as Field Training Officer William Mosebach.
FTO Mosebach has been a member of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office since 2020. He is currently a patrol deputy assigned to the West Precinct. He joined the Sheriff’s Office after proudly serving in the United States Marine Corps from 2012 through 2019.
The investigation is still active and ongoing at this time. FTO Mosebach has been placed on paid administrative leave, as is customary in all deputy involved shootings. Once the investigation is complete, it will be submitted to the State Attorney for review.
