Earlier today, at approximately 2:46 a.m., deputies responded to the 1100 block of Egret Lake Way in Viera in reference to a disturbance.  Upon arrival, deputies learned that a domestic disturbance had occurred where a male threatened a female with a firearm and a knife.  In an effort to get away from the male subject, the female ran to a neighbor’s residence to report the incident to law enforcement.   Deputies made telephone contact with the male, who was not cooperative with the investigation and was making verbal threats.  At approximately 3:45 a.m., the male exited his residence while holding a handgun.   As deputies attempted to negotiate with him, the male pointed the handgun at them, and a deputy was forced to respond to the threat of the firearm by discharging his weapon.

The male was provided medical attention until paramedics arrived and transported him to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

The identities of the involved parties or law enforcement personnel are not being released at this time.

As is customary in officer involved shootings, the deputy has been placed on paid Administrative Leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The investigation of this incident is ongoing and being conducted by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.  Once complete, the investigative findings will be submitted to the Office of the State Attorney, 18th Judicial Circuit.

Additional updates and details will be provided as they become available.
