NR 24-09 Deputy Involved Shooting
Earlier today, at approximately 1:00 p.m., deputies responded to the area of 5565 North US 1, Palm Shores in reference to a vehicle burglary. Upon arrival, deputies encountered a male and a female, with the female brandishing a firearm. Both the male and female then fled on foot to a nearby wooded area. A search was conducted by deputies and officers with the Melbourne Police Department, assisted by K-9 and the BCSO Aviation Unit (STAR). The subjects were located in the wooded area and during the attempted apprehension, a deputy responded to the threat of the firearm by discharging their weapon, wounding the female.
The female was provided medical attention until paramedics arrived and transported her to a local hospital. The male subject was taken into custody without incident. A records check revealed that each of the subjects were wanted.
The identities of the involved parties or law enforcement personnel are not being released at this time.
As is customary in officer involved shootings, the deputy has been placed on paid Administrative Leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
The investigation of this incident is ongoing and being conducted by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. Once complete, the investigative findings will be submitted to the Office of the State Attorney, 18th Judicial Circuit.
