NR 22-39 Sheriff’s Office conducting death investigation
The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that occurred last night, December 11, 2022, in Port St John. Deputies responded to the McDonald’s located at 6857 North Highway 1, Port St John, at approximately 8:30 p.m. in reference to a report that a person had been shot. Upon arrival, deputies located a white male in the parking lot with a gunshot wound. The male was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
The preliminary investigation has found that the decedent walked up to a vehicle in the parking lot and physically attacked the male driver who was eating his food. The decedent continued striking the driver during the unprovoked attack. The driver armed himself with a firearm from within the vehicle and fired one shot, which struck the male. Based on evidence collected thus far, it appears the decedent mistakenly attacked the driver believing him to be someone else.
Agents from the Homicide and Crime Scene Units are currently in the process of interviewing potential witnesses and collecting evidence to determine the circumstances surrounding the death. The Sheriff’s Office is not releasing the name of the decedent or the driver at this time and no arrests have been made. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.
