NR 21-04 Deputy Involved Shooting
On January 31, 2021, at approximately 3:35 a.m., the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office responded to a female advising a suspicious person was outside of her residence located on Grant Avenue, Cape Canaveral. Deputies responded and did not locate anyone and cleared the scene.
At approximately 3:48 a.m. in the area of Ridgewood and Hayes Avenue, Cape Canaveral a second call was received in reference to a suspicious person. At approximately 3:53 a.m. a deputy made contact with the suspicious person who was attempting to conceal himself. The suspicious male then confronted the deputy and discharged a firearm at the deputy multiple times from close range. The suspicious person was then challenged by the second deputy who responded to the lethal threat with deadly force. The suspect was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment and is currently in stable condition.
The initial deputy was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation.
As is customary in officer involved shootings, the deputies have been placed on paid Administrative Leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
The suspect involved was under an active injunction for protection against the original caller and currently out on bond for a previous criminal charge.
The investigation of this incident is ongoing. We will provide updates and further details as they become available.
