NR 20-10 Deputy Involved Shooting
The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a Deputy involved shooting that took place this morning at 7405 Orchestra Lane, Viera, Florida.
At approximately 6:40 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office responded to an assisted living facility regarding a male who was threatening to harm himself. Upon arrival the deputies learned that the male had concealed a firearm and displayed it to a facility employee who then ran from the area. As the Deputies approached they heard a shot and began speaking with the male. The male then raised the firearm and in response to the deadly threat, one deputy discharged his duty weapon striking the male. The male was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
The decedent will be transported to the Brevard County Medical Examiner’s Office where a post mortem examination will be conducted.
The investigation is ongoing as Agents are interviewing witnesses and Crime Scene Investigators are collecting evidence at the scene.
At this time the Sheriff’s Office is not releasing the names of the deputies or the male involved in this incident. We will provide updates and further details as they become available.
The Deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave as is customary in officer involved shootings.
