NR 18-40 Brevard Inmate Dies After Suffering Medical Emergency at the Jail
A Brevard County Jail inmate has died after suffering an apparent medical event during his booking procedure on December 9, 2018. 38-year-old Gregory Edwards of Valkaria was pronounced deceased December 10, 2018 at a local hospital.
Edwards was arrested on December 9, 2018 by the West Melbourne Police Department for the charges of Battery, Violation of Probation, and Resisting Arrest with Violence. West Melbourne officers responded to a complaint where Edwards had battered a worker who was placing toys in a truck for a children’s charity. Edwards began acting erratic and became combative with the officer’s during the arrest and booking process.
An autopsy was conducted by the Brevard Medical Examiner who has pended his findings, awaiting lab and toxicology reports. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit is investigating the death. The investigation to date has identified a previous inhalant use/abuse as a possible cause of the medical event.
